Spring is here!
Spring is upon us and my mind is running rapid with everything spring. I love the outdoors and nature. I also love to garden. Every year on Mother’s Day, my wonderful man and I go out and purchase all the plants my heart desires. On his dime of course. 😉 His present to me for Mother’s Day! We pick up our vegetable plants, flowers, dirt and fertilizer for the summer. Then we spend the rest of the day planting, watering and taking care of our new babies! We have done this for years and I wouldn’t change it for the world!
Gardening was not for me?
I remember way back when I used to associate gardening as a hobby people did when they retire. But then I started to garden myself and it completely changed my life. It started with picking up a few flowers to decorate the outside of my home with. Now every summer I have a large garden, a good size strawberry patch, a couple of ferns, and many many flower arrangements that I put together myself. Now I couldn’t even imagine going through a summer with out my babies (plants)!
Seven reasons why you should garden!
So let me tell you exactly why I couldn’t go with out my babies, why I garden and why you should too!
- Gardening gets you outdoors (and I love the outdoors) – your garden needs to be tended to daily. Some days less than others. but yes it is nevessary to at least check up on your babies. So this give you a reason to get outside and get some fresh air. (This is assuming your garden is outdoors)
- Better Air Quality – Plants use carbon monoxide to affiliate their growth. During this process they also emit oxygen. They are cleaning the quality of the air by absorbing the carbon monoxide and are replacing it with the fresh oxygen. So while you are outside working on your garden or just enjoying it, you are able to take advantage of the better air quality your plants are creating for you.
- Plants can create a beautiful escape – I have many plants around my yard. Tongs of vegetables and multiple different flowers. I place them strategically around my yard to create a soothing retreat that I am able to enjoy every day! (Well except for during the winter….humbug)
- Gardening can be a stress reliever – There is something soothing about taking care of a seedling and watching it grow with your own eyes. Knowing that you were the one, who planted it, fed it and helped it grow into a beautiful plant.
- The health benefits – There are so many health benefits when it comes to gardening. From mood boosting all the way to decreasing illness and life threatening diseases.
- Good for your checkbook – Growing your own fruits and veggies help to keep a few $ in your pocket. Even if you just plant a tomato plant. A packet of tomato seeds costs about $2. A bit of dirt and some water, and your tomato plant will grown an abundance of tomatoes that you can use in a multitude of recipes. Bonus- you can save seeds from your plants, for the following year. Then you don’t have to purchase them again!
- Healthier foods – Last but not least, growing your own fruits and veggies will help you eat healthier. By growing your own food you have control of what chemicals – if any – are used on them. Opposed to the foods that you find at the groceries stores, that can very well be loaded with pesticides and other chemicals, and who knows what else!
And there you have it. Seven of the many many reasons I garden and why I think you should too! I hope you enjoyed reading about them but I really hope you get out there and try it yourself. You don’t have to start big or spend a lot. Just start with a couple of plants and eventually you might just be like me. Putting plants into just about every nook and cranny of your yard that you can!
