Happy Galentines! Ok Galentines is not really until next week, but I wanted to post this now so you would have time to make these awesome DIY Valentines Pots to give as gifts, to your special Galentine!
What is Galentines you ask? Galentines was created from fictional character Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler) on the tv sitcom Parks and Recreation. Leslie creates Galentines day to celebrate the happiness of female friendship. As Leslie puts it “Ladies celebrating Ladies”. Galentine’s is celebrated on the 13th of February, and was originally celebrated by having a boozy brunch with all your gal friends! Sounds like a win win to me! And I am not the only one who loved the idea, many women around the country felt the same way, so much so that it is now a widely recognized non-traditional holiday!
Now although Leslie originally celebrated Galentines by having a boozy brunch, there are many ways you can celebrate with the favorite women of your life. You can do a group mani pedi, go to the movies, a small shopping spree together or you can have a nice intimate get together in your home. Either way these DIY Valentines Pots are a perfect gift to give your awesome gal friends!
Now that you know exactly what Galentines is and you are super anxious on partaking in this wonderful holiday. Let’s get into the details of how to make these super cute gifts!

- Terra Cotta Pot
- Acrylic Paint – white, pink and red
- Paint Brushes
- Paint Stencils and/or Stamps
- Sandpaper 220 grit
- Old newspaper or something to put down as a barrier for spills (I used a brown paper bag)
- Wet Lint Free Rag
- Old Skinny Tall Jar
- Clear Enamel Spray Paint
Prepping
You want to start by prepping your work area and your terra cotta pot. Lay down your newspaper to help prevent any spills from getting on to your work table. Next grab your terra cotta pot and lightly sand the entire outside and 1 inch of the top of the inside of the pot.
Once you have finished lightly sanding, use your wet rag to clean off any dust that remains on the pot. And use an old jar to prop the terra cotta pot up, upside down, to dry.
Your Base Coat
After the pot has dried, which should only be a few minutes, paint a base coat of white around the entire outside of the pot. It took me 2 coats two completely cover the pot. Then allow the paint to dry completely.
Next you will want to paint about an inch down on the inside of the pot. I went as far down as to the bottom of the lip on the pot. This will give the pot a nice complete look once you have placed your plant inside.
Adding Your Decorative Hearts
Now it is time to add the decorative hearts. You can do this in many different ways. You can free draw/paint the hearts on, or you can use a stamp, or you can use a stencil.
For these pots we used a stencil I made by simply printing out some hearts on to regular printer paper, and cutting them out. Then we took a pencil and traced around the hearts onto the pots. Last we used our paint brushes and painted over and inside our outline. I also used the eraser on my pencil to dot on one of my hearts to give it a bit more texture.
Like I said there are many different ways you can create the hearts on the pots. Its really up to you on how you would like to accomplish this step.
Protecting Your Hardwork
Once you have finished painting on your hearts and they have thoroughly dried, you have to seal the acrylic paint, to protect all your hard work. Follow the same steps as painting the base coat on your pot.
Place the pot upside down, on your old jar, and spray with the clear enamel spray paint. Once completely dry, flip over and spray the inside lip of your pot.
That’s it. Your DIY Valentines Pots are finished. Now to find the perfect plant to put in them.
The Perfect Plants
I picked up a few ivy plants for ours. Not only are they an easy to care for indoor houseplant, but they also have air purifying abilities. And due to the winter months at hand, it is not much of an option to open all of the windows to circulate fresh air into our homes. I was also checking out some baby ferns for these, but you can use whatever plant you like. Note: Due to the acrylic paint and the clear enamel, these are not to be used for any plants you will utilizing for consumption.
I know some gals who are going to love these! But these would also work as perfect gifts for many occasions, such as Mothers day, Teachers Appreciation Day, Grandmas Birthday. And they are easily adaptable for any type of décor. They can be fun and festive for an outdoor bbq. Or they can be painted a chic farmhouse look. You can also use them in your office to hold your pens, markers and highlighters. The possibilities are endless!
Let me know!
