Super Simple Wine Holder Makeover…..But First!
Hey Everyone! Todays Home Décor Project is a Super Simple Wine Holder Makeover!!! But before I get into that, I want to tell you about something I am so excited about. I am doing a Makeover on our Master Bedroom. And I have to disclose to you that our “Master Bedroom” is actually not very Master at all. It is actually very very tiny. I’m talking an 8x12ft room, which equals up to less than 100 sq. ft. I know crazy right. Oh and our closet….is only deep enough to hang close in and a mere 3 1/2ft wide. So I will definitely be doing some major brainstorming when it comes to storage.
Not only will it need to have an AMPLE amount of storage but I plan on having multiple pieces of furniture in there. And I also want it to be comfy, cozy and beautiful! I sure do have a lot on my plate for this project. But I know I can get it done. And I am going to be sharing all my tricks, tips, ideas and pitfalls with you, while on my journey to getting it done! So be sure to follow me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest, so you won’t miss a single thing!
And On To Our Simple Wine Holder Makeover
This Wine Holder reminds me why I wanted to start a blog in the first place. I always find lil gems thrown out on the side of the road. Gems that with just a new perspective and a simple coat of paint, they can have a whole new beautiful amazing life. But unfortunately some people just don’t have the vision or the imagination. And that is where I come in! I love to show you how with just a little bit of effort you can transform a piece “trash” into some thing so chíc that you wouldn’t dare give it up. And now not only are you saving precious dollars, but you are also helping the earth by keeping items from going into the landfill! Yay You!
And that is exactly what todays project is. Just as the title says, “Super Simple Wine Holder Makeover”. When I found this Wine Holder, it screamed “old school” and I’m not talking good old school. I’m talking 1980’s olive green paint old school. But it was in great condition. So I knew it was going to be a simple makeover, as simple as a new coat of paint. Almost!
Prepping The Wine Holder
Yup just a new coat of paint, is all it needed. But first I had to prep it for paint. To disassemble the wine holder I simply unscrewed the outside knobs from inside poles. So know I had five poles, 10 knobs and two side pieces. I gave the knobs and poles a sanding by hand. And used my corner sander for the flat side components of the wine holder. Starting with a higher grit sand paper and then working towards a lower grit for a smoother finish. Because of the red stain that was on the wood I decided to shellac the whole piece. The shellac acts as a primer and barrier, not allowing any residual stain to bleed through.
Time for that coat of paint!
Once the shellac a dried thoroughly I painted everything white. Using my paint sprayer I applied two coats of paint. I liked how the white looked, but I wanted to give it a little extra something. So I decided to do a stripe of grey down the front and back of it. I used painters tape to tape off the stripe and to tape off the inside of the circles. For the grey paint I used Rustoleum’s Country Grey Chalk Paint. I applied couple of coats of that as well, allowing sufficient drying time in between. Once it finished drying, I did a light sanding by hand, with a 220 grit piece of sandpaper. Just to give the grey a small worn appearance.
Protect all your “hard work”
This piece really wasn’t all that much of hard work at all, but I still wanted to make sure I protected it from bumps and scratches. So I applied a coat of Minwax Polycrylic. And that was it. This project was finished. Super simple right!
Keep your eyes open!
Keep your eyes open for those gems sitting on the curb, because some times all it takes is a new perspective and a fresh coat of paint!
