DIY Mirror Makeover
I have an easy DIY Mirror makeover for you today. I found this sad mirror laying on the side of the road the other day, so I decided to scoop it up and give it a new life. The frame of the mirror was pretty beat up. There were dents and dings and old stickers covering it. It was just screaming to be upcycled. And I was just the person to do it!
Now I knew that even after removing the all the old stickers, I would have to find away to cover all those dents and dings . Maybe its because it was the end of winter and I just wanted spring to come, but flowers popped into my head. Why not use flowers to cover up the wear and tear?!?!?! And that is just what I did. Let me tell you it was soooo simple!
1st things 1st
The first thing I did for this DIY Mirror Makeover was take off all of those stickers. With a little elbow grease and a putty knife, they came off pretty easily. Then I gave the frame a quick sanding. This would allow the paint adhere to it better. Finally I cleaned it all off. I used Windex for the mirror itself and mineral spirits to clean off the frame. It was pretty dingy and dirty.
A Lil Primer And Paint
After the mirror was cleaned up, it was on to painting. Using painters tape I taped off a border around the mirror next to the frame. This helped to prevent paint from getting on the mirror and made for an easier painting process. Which meant, I didn’t have to be so careful when painting the portion of the frame that butted up against the mirror. I wanted to make sure the black paint wouldn’t seep through my new clean white paint, so I used a heavy duty primer. The one I used for this DIY Mirror Makeover was Zinsser Bullseye 123 Primer in a grey tint. I did one coat of the primer, front and back) and let it dry completely before moving on to the actual paint.
For the paint on the frame, I chose a white paint. I really wanted to flowers to pop out and that is exactly what a fresh white background would allow them to do. The white paint I used was some basic white paint we had from freshening up the trim in the house. I applied two coats, making sure there was sufficient drying time before applying the second. I did the front and then repeated the process on the back. The thought about not even messing with the back came to mind, because you know who’s gonna see it any ways? ME….. that’s who! And I just couldn’t live with that….lol! Also doing things half-as* is just not how I roll.
Time For Flowers
Once the mirror was all painted and completely dry it was time to add the flowers. So I headed to my local Michaels store and purchased these beautiful light blue and white Ash Stem Hydrangeas. One of each. And but of course I had a coupon! So these babies only cost me $9. Which if you ask me is still a little steep for two flowers. But since that was basically my only cost for this project, since I already had the paint. I went with it!
When I got home I gathered my supplies and got to work. I had my freshly painted mirror, my flowers and my handy dandy glue gun. Deconstructing the flowers, was my first step in this process. After taking every single petal off the stem, I pre-arranged them on my frame. It only took a few minutes to find a layout I liked. When I was satisfied with the arrangement, I went back and glued each petal one by one, to the frame. My arrangement consisted of laying 3-4 petals, of the same color, on top of each other, to form a small flower. Then I alternated between blue and the white flowers along my frame. This was about a 40 min. process. A bit time consuming yes, but well worth it!
And that is it. This project was finished. Super simple and super budget friendly!
