Three Masterpieces from one thrown out entry-way console table!
Three Chíc Home Décor Pieces from one broken entry-way console table. Can you believe that! Let me show you how I made the 3rd and final masterpiece. And if you haven’t checked out the first two you can see them here Chíc DIY Entry Way Console Table and here Upcycled Chíc Side Table Made From A Dresser Drawer And Recycled Table Legs For Only $5. The only things I had to purchase for this project is 2 eyelets and a chain. And these cost me less than $5. Everything else I had on hand. Which included a piece of luan, sandpaper, stain, black chalk board paint and staples. Oh yeah, and the frame of the bottom shelf from the old console table.
Prepping The Frame
Lets get into it shall we. The frame of the bottom shelf had these notches in it, which were unnecessary for what I was going to do with it. So, I used my circular saw to cut them off. As a result, I got a nice clean rectangle, sweet.
Then it was time to sand the frame down. This seemed like it was going to take a bit of work, so I used my framing sander to help with this step First, I started with a low grit piece of sand paper and then I worked my way up to a higher grit. This helped to ensure I had a smooth finish in the end. I left the paint on the edges of the frame, because I liked how it gave it a rustic look. Once the sanding was complete, I wiped it down with a microfiber cloth to remove any dust or debri.
Stain And Protect
Next it was time to stain. Lets see what stain should I go with?!?!?! My fav of course. Which is Red Mahogany. I’m really not sure why I love this stain as much as I do. Maybe its because its the first stain I ever used, which really isn’t many, or maybe I love how (in my opinion) it gives my pieces and industrial look. IDK….I just love it!
Once I had finished applying the stain in my desired effect, and had allowed ample time for drying, I protected the frame with a couple coats of Helmsman Spar Urethane. And I also allowed sufficient drying time for both coats.
Time For The Chalk Board
And now it was time to move on to the inside of the frame, the actual chalk board. There was a piece of luan, still left over from one of our home improvement projects, sitting in our garage. So I used it for this project. In addition to using luan in this piece, I also used some of it in a previous post. DIY Industrial Chíc Hello Wall Sign Décor. You can buy a 4’x8′ piece at the lumber store for about $13.
FYI. Since making this post I found a cheaper alternative. It’s called: hardboard panel, at least that is what its called at my Menards. You can get 4’x8′ piece for $6.25. I only like it for certain things though. Its consists of compressed pieces of wood and won’t hold up to outside conditions. And will ruin if exposed to moisture on a continual basis.
Back to the project. I took a piece of my extra luan and cut it to fit inside the frame. For this, I used the inside of the frame as a stencil and added a 1/2 inch to each side. This allowed it to sit snug in the lip of the frame. My circular saw helped me with this step. Once I had that completed I primed it with paint primer and then painted it with Rust-Oleums Black Chalk board Paint. The luan has a nice smooth side to paint on, therefore there was no reason to sand it.
Lets Assemble
Once I had my two pieces prepped, it was time to assemble. I placed the luan into the lip of the backside of the frame and used my staple gun to secure it into place. Then I simple screwed an eyelet into two corners of the side of the frame, attached the chain and my masterpiece was completed. You can opt out of adding the eyelets and the chain if you prefer. Just attach some d-rings to the back for hanging. I like the chain, because I think it adds to the industrial look of it. Which is what I was trying to accomplish with this chalk board.
Third masterpiece out of one broken console table. From street trash to Home Décor Gems! And I truly love how each piece came out.
Keep an eye on the dumpsters near you, because you never know what Chíc Décor Piece you can create out of somebody else’s “trash”! 😉
