DIY All Natural Nopal Beauty Serum
Hey Everyone! Today I am going to show you how to make an All Natural Beauty Serum for less than $1. You might be asking me, what does a beauty serum have to do with wellness. Well, think about when you are about to go on a date with your man, or with a bestie or to a special family occasion. What do you do? You dress up, do your hair and make yourself look super pretty, super Beautiful. Now think about how you feel when you do that.. You feel good about your self. You might say “Dang I look good!” or “Man, I still got it!”. You feel confident, your happiness level goes up and your stress levels come down. That is some Wellness for the body and soul right there. This is the same concept when using a beauty serum.
The Many Health And Beauty Benefits Of Nopal
A nopal (cactus) has so many health and beauty benefits. It is full of Vitamin E, has 17 amino acids and has antioxidants that can prevent sun damage. One way you can take advantage of all the nutrients and benefits a nopal has to offer is by adding it to your diet. Another way is by applying it directly on your skin and hair. Applying this Nopal Beauty Serum directly on your face can not only get rid of excess oils, but can also combat acne. And by using it as a hair serum you will moisturize and nourish your locks.
Cactus is such a great beauty product that many high end beauty companies use it in their products. Below are a few of the premium products I found with cactus as one of their ingredients.
- La Bella Figura Pur Organic Barbary Fig Seed Oil $90
- 2 Grassroots Flowering Cactus Extreme Moisture Cream $89
- G.M. Collin Nutriderm Replenishing Complex – $54
- Serge Normant Meta Morphosis Hair Repair Treatment $48
- Kenza Pur Hair Treatment Oil $47
I Am In Love!
I having been using this beauty serum for over a month now and I have seen a big difference in the complexion of my face and the structure of my hair. My skins texture has become smoother and has a healthier glow. And acne scars and small blemishes have started to disappear over the period of use. My hair has more volume and a healthy bounce to it. Moisture has been added back, giving it a beautiful shine. I especially see a noticeable difference in the areas I bleached my hair for highlights. In those areas my hair was dry and course and now it is healthy and strong. All of this for less than $1
Having a healthy complexion and beautiful hair certainly makes me feel good about myself. Which definitely bring up my confidence, my happiness, and over all is good for my well being! And with a .44 cent price tag, I’m feeling really good!
Let me tell you how to make this wonderful Nopal (Cactus) Beauty Serum:
When I started looking into how to use the nopal for skin and hair benefits, their wasn’t a whole lot out their on how to prepare it for use. I wanted to make sure I got the most out of my cactus leaf. So it experimented with it. Cut it in half, I sliced it into strips, I diced it into pieces and after many tries, I think I came up with the best way to get all the nutrients and benefits from this amazing plant.
Where To Find A Nopal (Cactus)
You can find Cactus in many stores now in days. One medium size piece of cactus cost me a whopping .45 cents. How about that! When purchasing your Cactus you have the option to purchase them with or with out the prickly splines. I like to purchase mine with the splines still intact, because the price of purchasing them de-splined is 3-5 times more. If you purchase them with the splines intact you must be very careful when handling. Also you can purchase them de-splined for this recipe, you will just skip the first step.
Prepping Your Nopal
The first thing you want to do is cut off the spines. Lay the cactus down with the splines facing out. Then take your knife, almost completely horizontal to the cactus and start shaving off the spines. Do this for the front and back for the nopal. You do not have to worry about the ones one the outer edge of the Nopal, those are removed in the next step.
Once you have all the spines from the front and back of the cactus removed, you then want to cut off all of the outer edge of the cactus leaf. This is the easiest way to remove the splines from that area. Now you want to give our cactus a quick rinsing to remove any splines that may be sticking to the leaf and to remove any dirt and debris.
Time For A Soak
After you have sufficiently cleaned your nopal and are 100% sure you have removed all the splines, slice it in half. Kind of like butterflying a chicken breast, but cut it completely through. Then lay the two pieces on top of each other and dice it in to 1-2 inch pieces. You need a shallow dish to soak your nopal in. Place the nopal in a single layer, with the inside of the leaf facing down. Then add water. Just enough water to barely cover it the nopal. Then place it in the fridge to soak over night.
Once your Cactus has been soaking over night you will see how much it has soaked up the water. The cactus will now have globs of gel coming off of it.
Time To Make It Into A Serum
Now take all the pieces of cactus and all the liquid filled with globby goodness and put it into a blender. I used my Nutri-Bullet for this. Blend it up completely, where there are no chunks in it. It will look like and have the texture of a smoothie. Now pat yourself on the back, you have just made your own Nopal (Cactus) Beauty Serum! Yay!
(Update)
If you find you are having small pulp like cactus left in your mix, you can simply run the serum through a cheese cloth to collect all the remnants.
To use as a face serum: Place a small amount into your palms and rub all over a freshly cleaned face. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and then rinse off.
To use as a hair serum: Apply liberally to freshly washed hair. Leave in 15-20 minutes and rinse out.
I like to place my serum in this applicator bottle. It makes it easier when applying on my hair. You can find one similar at most beauty supply stores for any where between $2-$5.
This recipe makes about 12 ounces of serum. I use about 3 ounces on average, during one beauty regimen. I like to apply the serum twice a week. Sunday or Monday, after a long weekend styling my hair for nights out. And Thursday to get it looking great for my weekend of fun. With that said, this serum lasts me two weeks. I just pop it in the fridge and take it out when using. The liquid will separate while being stored, just give it a quick shake to mix, before using.
I hoped you enjoyed this DIY Nopal (Cactus) Beauty Serum post. Let me know if you try it and what you think!
